Compton Hill Water Tower turns old infrastructure into a landmark
Compton Hill Water Tower in Reservoir Park gives St. Louis a visible landmark where water infrastructure became civic architecture.
Compton Hill Water Tower is a good St. Louis story because it started as infrastructure and became one of the city’s easiest landmarks to spot.
The City landmark page places it at Compton Hill Reservoir Park near Grand and Russell and says it stands 179 feet high. The parks page adds the everyday detail: it was built as the superstructure for Stand Pipe No. 3 and has 198 steps.
That turns a technical water-system feature into a city-memory object. The tower helped even out water pressure, but it also gave south St. Louis a stone-and-brick landmark with a view.
Use the city landmark and park pages for current tour, reservation, and access details.
