A Morgan County home purchase can need a collector address check

Morgan County says real estate tax bills go to the owner of record as of January 1, and buyers should contact the Collector if they purchased during the year.

A Morgan County closing can happen months before the tax bill is mailed. The bill still follows the owner of record as of January 1 unless the county has been given a different mailing instruction.

That can surprise a buyer who takes possession later in the year. The deed may be on file and the keys may be in hand, but the bill address may still need attention. A buyer who purchases during the year should contact the Collector’s Office.

This is a small after-closing chore with a real payoff. Make sure the Collector has the right mailing path, especially if the seller was the January 1 owner or if a lender, title company, or mailing address changed during closing. A real estate tax bill is easier to handle when it reaches the right mailbox the first time.
