Marion County personal property is a Jan. 1 and March 1 task

Marion County Assessor guidance says personal property is assessed as of January 1 and lists are due before March 1.

January 1 starts the Marion County personal-property year. The assessor’s record looks at what taxable personal property you have at the start of the year, and the updated list is due to the assessor before March 1.

That schedule affects more than cars. Trailers, boats, machinery, office equipment, and similar personal property can all belong on the list. A household in Hannibal, Palmyra, or rural Marion County may not think about the assessor until a plate-renewal or tax-bill problem appears, but the record started months earlier.

Use the office split to keep the errand straight. The assessor handles the roll and updates to vehicle or equipment information. The collector handles payment and receipts later. A new resident, new vehicle owner, or person who sold a vehicle should fix the assessor record first, because the collector’s receipt depends on the roll being right.
