The Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse marks Cardiff Hill

Marion County already has the famous Twain museum layer, but Cardiff Hill gives Hannibal a different kind of local landmark. Hannibal Parks and Recreation places the Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse at 499 Main Street, on 10 acres of park atop Cardiff Hill.

The parks page ties the hill to the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn landscape and lists the site as a city park amenity rather than a private attraction. It also gives the climb some shape: 244 steps lead up from the north end of Main Street, and the area around the lighthouse offers a wide view of Hannibal and the Mississippi River.

The lighthouse has its own memory trail. Hannibal Parks says it was built in 1935 as a memorial to Mark Twain on his 100th birthday, was leveled by a windstorm in 1960, and was rebuilt in 1963. The public is not allowed inside, so the real visit is the hill, the view, the stairs, and the story panel.
