Hamilton House gives Bethany a rare Italianate landmark
The Hamilton or Edna Cuddy Memorial House and Gardens gives Bethany a National Register-listed house tied to architecture, local business, and Harrison County memory.
Bethany’s courthouse story is important, but Hamilton House adds a different kind of landmark. The National Register file identifies the Hamilton, or Edna Cuddy Memorial, House and Gardens in Bethany, near the downtown square.
The architecture is the first hook. The file describes the house as elaborate for Harrison County and Bethany, and notes that Italianate architecture is rare in the county. That makes the house stand out as more than a large old residence.
The people make it stick. The file connects the house to local merchant and civic life, including business, banking, city service, and the Harrison County Historical Society. In other words, the house carries a story about who helped build Bethany’s public and commercial life.
Use the National Register material for the historic source trail. For any visit, event, or interior access, check current local information first; a historic-house listing is not the same thing as an open-hours promise.
