Bethany's county-seat story starts with a town called Dallas
Bethany became Harrison County's county seat after an early town site called Dallas was surveyed, renamed by local vote, and later tied into the railroad and I-35.
Bethany is the county seat today, but the local story has a good bend in it. Early commissioners chose the county-seat site in the south part of Harrison County, and the first surveyed town there was called Dallas. In 1845, a small 19-acre town site was laid out. Then residents voted on a new name, and Dallas became Bethany.
That little name change is useful because it keeps the courthouse town from feeling like it just appeared fully formed. Bethany grew from a county-seat decision, then picked up new layers as transportation changed. The city history points to the railroad arriving in 1890, while the modern community page places Bethany on I-35 between Kansas City and Des Moines.
For daily life, Bethany carries two jobs at once. It is where county government and records are centered, and it is also the highway service stop many travelers know first.
