Lamar's courthouse story is older than the present building

Lamar’s courthouse square carries more history than the present brick building suggests at first glance. Barton County’s Historical Society page says the county was created in 1855 and Lamar was selected as county seat. It then traces earlier courthouse buildings, including a courthouse burned during the Civil War.

The same source says the fourth and present courthouse was constructed in 1887 to 1888, with pressed brick, Barton County sandstone, and entrance arches made by Lamar Iron Works.
