Mozingo Lake is Maryville's recreation anchor
Mozingo Lake is both Maryville's water-supply reservoir and a major recreation park, so the lake belongs on the practical map and the local-identity map.
Mozingo Lake makes Nodaway County feel less flat on the map. East of Maryville, it is a city-owned recreation park, a fishing lake, and a water-supply reservoir at the same time.
Maryville describes Mozingo Lake Park as a 3,000-acre facility with 26 miles of shoreline around a 1,006-acre lake, three miles east of town. DNR’s watershed summary adds the utility layer: Mozingo Lake was created in 1994 by damming Mozingo Creek and serves as Maryville’s drinking-water supply.
That double identity is the useful part. A visitor may see camping, boating, fishing, trails, or golf. A resident may see the city’s water source. A landowner upstream may see a watershed question, because DNR treats Mozingo as the focus of a watershed-management plan.
Use the city or park source for facilities and passes, MDC for fishing information, and DNR or the city for water and watershed questions. Mozingo is fun, but it is not only recreation.
