Nodaway County Community Lake gives the county a second public-water anchor, with pasture, old fields, a boat ramp, fishing access, and camping north of Maryville.
Mozingo Lake gets most of the attention near Maryville, but Nodaway County Community Lake gives the county another public-water story. It sits north of Maryville off Highway 148, on land that MDC describes as mostly pasture and old fields.
That setting gives the lake a different feel. It is not a big resort-style anchor. It is a smaller conservation-area lake, with a boat ramp, a disabled-accessible fishing jetty, and a privy. MDC also lists hiking, bird watching, waterfowl hunting, camping, and fishing.
Residents and visitors do not always need a large park. Sometimes the useful local geography is a quiet lake, a fishing jetty, or a public outdoor area close enough for an ordinary afternoon.
Current camping, hunting, boating, and access rules belong with MDC. On the ground, the lasting picture is a smaller public lake close enough for an ordinary afternoon.
