Linneus is the county seat, not the biggest town

Newcomers often assume the largest town holds the courthouse, but Linn County's seat is small Linneus, which is where the assessor, collector, recorder, and county commission offices sit.

Courthouse errands in Linn County point to Linneus, even though Brookfield and Marceline are the names many newcomers hear first. Linneus is the county seat, the place where the main county offices are gathered. That is easy to miss if you are used to the biggest town also being the government stop.

The seat matters in plain errands. The assessor handles property value records. The collector takes county tax payments. The recorder of deeds keeps land records. The county commission meets and acts from the county-government side of the house. Those jobs do not move to Brookfield or Marceline just because those towns are larger.

So a deed copy, an assessment question, an in-person tax payment, or a county commission matter usually starts with Linneus. Treat the town name as a routing clue, not trivia. It can save a wasted drive when a property or records errand is really a courthouse errand.
