The Rock Island corridor is a county mobility project
Jackson County's Rock Island Rail Corridor is a former rail line being used as a multi-modal county corridor through the metro.
The Rock Island corridor is one of Jackson County’s best examples of rail history turning into civic geography. Jackson County Parks + Rec says the Rock Island Rail Corridor is a 17.7-mile former freight and passenger rail corridor, acquired by Jackson County in partnership with KCATA in 2016. The stated goal is a multi-modal corridor for current and future transportation needs.
That matters for residents because it is not just a trail amenity. A former rail line can shape commuting options, bike routes, redevelopment edges, and how neighborhoods connect across city lines.
For current trailheads, open sections, and county park rules, start with Jackson County Parks + Rec rather than assuming the corridor works like a state park.
