Frost Island keeps a sand-prairie story on the Des Moines River
Frost Island Conservation Area ties Clark County to Des Moines River wetlands, flood recovery, and a small remnant sand prairie.
Frost Island gives Clark County one of those quiet “wait, really?” stories. It is not only river bottom. MDC says the area includes wetlands, Des Moines River frontage, and a small remnant sand prairie on a sandy terrace.
The backstory starts with water. MDC says the area was acquired through the Emergency Wetland Reserve Program after the long 1993 flood damaged farmland with silt, sand, and scouring. Flood protection levees were not repaired there, so floodwater could return to the area and reduce downstream damage.
That history makes the place easier to read. Some Clark County land along the river is working ground. Some is restored wetland. Some holds rare or uncommon sand-loving plants. Frost Island puts those pieces close together.
For a visitor, check MDC first. It is the official source for access, hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, and any seasonal rules.
