Carter County's courthouse is the cobblestone clue in Van Buren
MU Extension's Missouri Courthouses survey describes Carter County's 1871 courthouse, its 1930s remodeling, and its native cobblestone exterior.
Carter County’s courthouse gives Van Buren a very specific look. MU Extension’s Missouri Courthouses survey says the 1871 courthouse was remodeled, expanded, and covered with native cobblestones during a 1935-1937 Public Works Administration project.
The same survey says Carter County was organized on March 10, 1859. It says the county was named after local pioneer Zimri Carter and that Van Buren is the county seat. It also describes the remodeled building as still serving as the Carter County courthouse.
For a local reader, this is useful color because the building is both an office address and a piece of county identity. When you see courthouse references in Van Buren, the exterior itself is part of the county story, not just a backdrop for paperwork.
