Vehicle licensing runs through DOR, but Boone tax records still matter

Boone County explains that vehicle licensing is handled by Missouri DOR, while county tax receipts and assessor records still affect the paperwork.

A plate errand can involve both the state and the county.

Missouri DOR handles licensing and titling. Boone County does not become the license office, but its tax record can still control whether the paperwork is ready. Missouri licensing may require a current personal property tax receipt or a certificate of non-assessment.

The common snag is the January 1 list. The vehicles on the receipt should be the vehicles owned on January 1 of the tax year. If one is missing from a paid receipt, the fix points back to the Assessor so the personal property account can be updated.

DOR handles the license. Boone County handles the tax record that may make the license possible.
