Hiking, Biking & Beaches

What's new this year

The trails and the beaches are the same as they were last year — the rules and the conditions are what change. Here are the few things worth rechecking before you head out this season.

E-bike trail access is still settling

Where you can ride an electric-assist bike keeps changing — it depends on the class of e-bike and on the agency that runs the trail. Don't assume last year's answer still holds. Check the current rules and the land manager before you go.

Trails close and get muddy after rain

Singletrack takes time to dry out, and riding it wet leaves ruts that wreck the trail for everyone. If you're leaving tracks, turn around and come back another day. Check trail status before you load the bike.

Beach advisories change weekly

Water quality at a swim beach can flip from one week to the next, so a clean day last month tells you nothing about today. Check the posted status before you swim — and remember a clean-looking swimming hole is still untested natural water.

Seasons matter

Spring wildflowers and fall color are the best times to hike, summer is for beaches and rail-trails, and in fall the shared public lands fill up with hunters. When it's hunting season, wear blaze orange, make noise, and check the area before you head out.

Before you go

Missouri Porch explains; the agency that runs the trail or beach decides.

Last checked: 2026-06-18. Trail rules, e-bike access, and beach conditions change with the season and the manager — and out here, no one is watching out for you. Check before you go, carry water, and watch the kids.

This is a plain-English summary — not the law, a medical authority, or a guarantee of safety. Trail rules, e-bike access, and beach conditions change — check the managing agency before you go. In an emergency, call 911.
