Texas County is described as Missouri's largest county by land area
The county's sheer size shapes how far apart towns, county offices, and services are, and it is a commonly repeated 'largest' claim that should be checked against an authoritative source before it is stated as fact
Houston sits near the middle of a big Ozark county. Texas County’s own history page calls it the largest of Missouri’s 114 counties and gives the size as 1,179 square miles of Ozark Highland. It also says the seat of justice was laid out near the center of the county in 1846, and that the present courthouse, built in 1932, is the county’s sixth.
That turns the “largest county” line into something useful. A resident near one edge of Texas County may be a long drive from the courthouse, assessor, collector, county clerk, or another county service in Houston. A school, clinic, feed store, or larger town may also be farther away than it looks on a small map.
For a move or land purchase, measure real driving time. County size is not trivia when the errand is a tax receipt, assessment question, court date, or winter road trip. Use Census or state spatial data for the land-area ranking, and use the county site for current office pages before planning a county errand.
