Some Taney County businesses need the collector's merchant license
Taney County's collector says a county merchant license can be required in addition to any city or other local business license.
Opening or moving a small retail business in Taney County can involve a county step as well as a city step. The Taney County Collector’s merchant-license page asks whether the business is located in Taney County, whether it has a Missouri sales tax number, and whether it collects and remits sales tax. The page also says a county-issued merchant license is in addition to any city or other local business license.
That is useful for a shop, stand, or other seller that sits inside Branson, Forsyth, Hollister, or an unincorporated area. A city business license does not automatically answer the county merchant-license question.
Before opening, confirm the address, city status, sales-tax account, and county merchant-license requirement with the collector’s office. Keep state sales-tax registration separate from county and city licensing.
