White Haven ties St. Louis County to Ulysses and Julia Grant
White Haven in Grantwood Village is a National Park Service site tied to Julia Dent Grant's childhood and the Grants' first home together.
White Haven makes St. Louis County history feel close to home instead of far away in a textbook. The National Park Service says the estate in Grantwood Village was built between 1812 and 1816 and was the childhood home of Julia Dent Grant.
It also became part of Ulysses S. Grant’s own St. Louis story. NPS says Grant met Julia Dent while he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, courted her at White Haven in 1844, and later lived there with their children in the 1850s.
That mix gives the site a different feel from a monument. It is a house, a family place, and a preserved landscape tied to one of the country’s most studied public figures. For a resident or visitor, White Haven is the official source trail for Grant history in St. Louis County. Check NPS for tours, access, and interpretation before going.
