U.S. 36 and the rail line run through the south of the county
The U.S. 36 corridor and the parallel railroad shape where towns, traffic, and services sit in Shelby County, and they are the main through-routes for commuting and winter travel.
Much of Shelby County’s movement runs along its southern edge, where U.S. Route 36 and a long-established rail line pass through Shelbina and Clarence. U.S. 36 is the main paved through-route, connecting the county east toward Hannibal and west toward the Macon and St. Joseph directions, so it carries the county’s commuter and freight traffic. Away from that corridor, getting around means state lettered routes and county gravel roads. For winter and storm conditions, check MoDOT’s traveler information for U.S. 36 and the lettered routes rather than assuming local roads are clear. If you are buying rural property off the highway, confirm whether your access road is county-maintained or private, since that decides who grades and plows it.
