Unionville's courthouse square is Putnam County's civic center

Unionville is where Putnam County errands point. The city lists the county clerk, treasurer, assessor, recorder of deeds, court offices, sheriff, and other county offices in courthouse rooms. That is the practical layer: parcels, deeds, tax bills, court stops, and county questions all pull back toward the courthouse.

The square adds the story. A State Parks National Register map for the Unionville Square Historic District explains the “Shelbyville Square” courthouse model, where storefronts face a centered or nearly centered courthouse. The map says half of Missouri’s 114 county seats used that model, and Unionville is one example. It also notes a good wrinkle: Unionville’s courthouse was not originally on the square, even though the square was part of the original plat.

The square is more than a parking-and-office detail. It shows how the county seat was meant to work, with courthouse, offices, storefronts, and market space all turning toward the middle of town. In a rural county near the Iowa line, that compact civic geography still matters.
