Lettered routes and gravel roads are normal navigation

Outside Unionville, getting around Putnam County means lettered state routes and a network of county gravel and dirt roads.

For a buyer, the practical question is whether the road reaching a property is county-maintained or private. That determines who grades it, plows it, repairs it, and whether year-round access is dependable.

A private or unmaintained road can make the owner responsible for upkeep. It can also change the feel of a place in mud season or after winter storms. Northern Missouri winters bring ice and blowing snow on top of the usual freeze-thaw, so a road that is fine in July can be hard in February.
