At river mile 849, Pemiscot County meets the rest of the map
At mile 849 on the Lower Mississippi River, a short rail line helps explain how Pemiscot County reaches far beyond the Bootheel. The port sits on State Highway D between Hayti and Caruthersville, with a rail spur about five miles long and 6,430 feet of storage track.
The highways close the triangle. Interstate 55 is about two miles west, and Interstate 155 is about three miles south. When the I-155 bridge opened in 1976, it gave this corner of Missouri a direct interstate crossing to Tennessee.
The result is a place where barges, railcars, and trucks can meet at a year-round slack-water harbor. Pemiscot County may look like fields and river levees from the road, but mile 849 is also a working junction.
