Swift Ditch shows wetland work behind I-55
MDC's Swift Ditch Access turns former row-crop ground near I-55 and Highway 80 into a wetland and fishing-access landscape.
Swift Ditch Access gives New Madrid County a practical piece of Bootheel color. The Missouri Department of Conservation says the area is in New Madrid County south of Sikeston, reached from Highway V and county gravel road 702 near the I-55 and Highway 80 junction.
The local texture is in the land itself. MDC says the department acquired the area in 1997 from a private landowner whose ground had been in row crops. The agency describes the site as mostly wetland habitat, with heavy, poorly drained soils and sandy loams on upland sites.
For visitors, that means this is not a manicured city park. MDC says low-profile levees and water-control structures were installed for wetland restoration and protection, including water quality, erosion control, and wildlife cover. Check MDC rules before fishing, hunting, or using the access.
