Versailles was selected and platted in the 1830s
Versailles' city history traces the town site to 1835 and explains the planned square-block layout at the center of Morgan County.
Versailles’ official history says Commissioner Street Thurston selected the site in 1835 and that donated blocks of land were platted for the town.
That makes the county seat feel more intentional. The square, courthouse, and older street pattern are not accidental leftovers; they come from a planned 1830s town site in central Morgan County.
It is good page color because it helps local readers connect the present courthouse town to the county’s early settlement geography.
It gives visitors a reason to read the street grid and public square together.
