Princeton's courthouse story includes a fire, a park, and a new site

Mercer County’s government geography is easy to see in the directory. The Missouri Association of Counties puts many offices at 802 E. Main Street in Princeton. That list includes commissioners, the county clerk, assessor, sheriff, circuit clerk-recorder, and treasurer/ex-officio collector.

The story behind that civic map is more interesting than a single address. University of Missouri Extension’s courthouse history says Mercer County bought 40 acres from the federal government for the county seat. The county sold lots and used the money for public buildings. The first courthouse was a two-story log building east of the public square in 1847. A brick courthouse followed in the center of the square in 1858.

Then fire changed the town layout. The 1858 courthouse burned on March 24, 1898. After the fire, the county sold the square to Princeton for a park, so the next courthouse needed a new site. Princeton residents donated money for land close to the square, voters approved courthouse bonds in 1911, and cornerstone ceremonies in June 1912 drew a large crowd. The dedication came in April 1913.

The courthouse is more than an errand stop. It explains why the county seat has a courthouse address, a park-square memory, and a public-building story all close together. For today’s needs, use the county directory for the right office before you drive.
