The Castor River Shut-Ins are one of Madison County’s standout natural features. Here, the Castor River squeezes through hard pink igneous rock, making smooth channels, pools, and tight rocky passages.
“Shut-ins” is the Ozark term for this kind of place: a river pinched into a narrow rocky gap it cannot easily widen. The rock ties the site to the old St. Francois Mountains geology that makes this corner of Southeast Missouri feel different from the cave-and-limestone Ozarks.
The area is managed as conservation land, so use Missouri Department of Conservation pages for parking, trails, access rules, and current conditions. The rock is uneven and water levels change, so check safety guidance before visiting.
