Waverly's apple orchards and the Missouri River bottoms
Waverly and the surrounding Missouri River bottoms are known for apple orchards and fertile bottomland farming, a distinctive part of Lafayette County's agricultural identity tied to the river.
Waverly is a town in the eastern part of Lafayette County. It sits along the Missouri River. The low, flat land near the river is called bottomland. The river leaves behind rich soil there, so the soil is very good for farming. This area is known for apple orchards and other fruit. Farmers also grow row crops, like corn and beans, in the same rich soil. For local people, this is everyday working farmland, not a tourist spot. In the fall, you may see farm stands and orchards in the area. Two good places to learn more are the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Missouri Grown program and University of Missouri Extension. Names of orchards, harvest times, and “famous for apples” claims can change. Always check with a current local source before you visit, since an orchard may not be open.
