Victoria Glades shows Jefferson County's dry hilltop ecology

Victoria Glades Conservation Area near Hillsboro gives Jefferson County a public example of dolomite glades, prairie grasses, and managed open woodland.

Victoria Glades Conservation Area sits in central Jefferson County, just east of Hillsboro. MDC’s area materials describe 239 acres of glades and forest. The plant list includes grasses such as little bluestem, Indian grass, sideoats grama, big bluestem, and prairie dropseed.

For a county page, the useful point is not only that there is another place to walk. Victoria Glades shows a dry, rocky side of Jefferson County that feels different from the river bottoms and suburban corridors. MDC also notes that glade areas are managed with prescribed fire and cedar removal. Use MDC’s current map and guidance before visiting.
