Building outside city service can involve county health permits

Jasper County Environmental Services says county building and onsite wastewater permits are tied together for many residence and commercial projects.

For land outside a city permit counter, Jasper County’s Environmental Services page is a key place to start. The county says its onsite wastewater ordinance requires building and wastewater permits, and its building-permit section applies to people building, erecting, installing, or constructing a residence, home, house, or commercial facility in Jasper County.

The county also says a building-permit review can check items such as the 911 address, lot size, flood plain, mine-waste areas, and stormwater control in unincorporated urban areas. That is a broader check than simply asking whether a structure can be framed.

For a buyer or landowner, the useful step is early: ask whether the property is on public sewer, whether an onsite system is involved, and whether Jasper County Environmental Services needs to review the project before work starts.
