Trenton's college layer goes back before NCMC

Trenton is the Grundy County seat, but its college layer makes the town feel different from many rural county seats its size. North Central Missouri College’s official history says higher education has been part of the area for more than 150 years. It points to Grand River College in 1850, Trenton College in 1867, Avalon College in 1890, and the Ruskin College experiment before today’s NCMC story.

The current college began as Trenton Junior College in 1925. NCMC says it was part of a K-14 education system at first and spent more than 40 years on the top floor of Trenton High School. In 1967, it moved to the former Central School building on Main Street near downtown Trenton, now Geyer Hall.

The institutional shape changed again in the 1980s. Voters made the college independent in 1986, and the name changed to North Central Missouri College in 1988 to reflect a wider regional mission. NCMC now describes multiple education centers, including the main campus in downtown Trenton and the Barton Farm Campus south of town.

For a renter, small landlord, student, or newcomer, this is the practical point: Trenton is not only where county business happens.
