Fellows Lake is both water supply and recreation
Fellows Lake north of Springfield is a City Utilities water-supply lake that also anchors fishing, trails, and outdoor recreation.
Fellows Lake began as a water project. City Utilities built it in 1955 by damming the Little Sac River, creating an 860-acre lake with 27 miles of shoreline north of Springfield.
The lake is named for Frank “Uncle Frank” Fellows, a City Utilities employee who helped secure the city’s future water supply. In the early 1990s, a pipeline linked Stockton Lake with Fellows Lake and nearby McDaniel Lake. That connection helps move water during high demand or low inflow.
Fishing, boating, and more than 25 miles of trails now share the same setting. Current access and boating rules can change, but the basic story does not: an outdoor day at Fellows Lake takes place on top of a working piece of Springfield’s water system.
