The Glade Top Trail is a National Scenic Byway through Mark Twain National Forest
A designated National Forest Scenic Byway near Ava opens public access to Ozark glades and overlooks, but it sits on federal land with rules distinct from state areas and private ground.
The Glade Top Trail is a National Forest Scenic Byway. That means it is a scenic drive on national forest land. It runs along a ridgetop in the Ava part of the Mark Twain National Forest, near Douglas County. You will see open Ozark glades (rocky, sunny clearings), far-off overlooks, and bright color in spring and fall. The trail crosses federal land run by the USDA Forest Service. So the rules are not the same as on Missouri state areas or private land. The Forest Service sets the road and trail status, the season conditions, fire rules, and any closures. These can change. Much of the byway is a gravel forest road. Before you go, check with the Forest Service for the managing ranger district and current conditions. Do not assume statewide rules apply. Drive it slow, like a scenic route, not a through-highway. Know which land is national forest, state area, or private. That helps you avoid trespassing.
