Cameron adds a state corrections layer to DeKalb County
Missouri's corrections system gives the Cameron area a state-facility layer, from Crossroads Correctional Center to a repurposed training academy.
Cameron gives DeKalb County a state-agency layer beside its farm and county-seat stories. Crossroads Correctional Center is in Cameron, at 1115 East Pence Road. That means state jobs, shift work, training, visitors, and public-safety routines are part of the local map too.
The story has changed in recent years. Crossroads Correctional Center was consolidated with Western Missouri Correctional Center in 2019. By 2022, residents and staff had moved into the smaller Crossroads facility, and the former Western Missouri site began a new use as the Academy for Excellence in Corrections. That academy uses a real corrections setting, with former housing units, control-center space, and classrooms reused for staff training.
That is the local hook: Cameron is more precise than “near prisons.” It has a corrections campus that has shifted from incarceration space to training space, while Crossroads remains an active DOC institution. For a newcomer, job seeker, landlord, or nearby resident, the practical move is simple. Check current facility names, hiring, and public information directly with DOC, because prison operations and training uses can change over time.
