Northern Missouri
Gallatin Conservation Area is the close public-land stop
Gallatin Conservation Area gives Daviess County a public wildlife area just south of the county seat, with timber, brushy draws, fencerows, and a small marsh.
Gallatin Conservation Area is not a distant regional park with a borrowed name. The Missouri Department of Conservation places it in Daviess County, five miles south of Gallatin on Highway 13 and a half mile east on Route M.
MDC describes the area as 669.5 acres, with timber, brushy draws, fencerows, and a 10-acre marsh in the north part of the property. The page says the area is managed for both game and non-game wildlife, with food plots, haying, controlled burning, and tree, shrub, and grass plantings.
That makes the area a good Daviess County color note. It explains why a county page should include more than courthouse and tax paperwork. A resident near Gallatin has an MDC wildlife area close by, but should still check MDC rules before hunting, fishing, riding, or using the area after hours.
