Dallas County tax paperwork starts with two different offices

Dallas County residents should separate assessor questions from collector questions when tracing a property-tax or vehicle-tax record.

The tax paper trail in Buffalo runs through two county offices, and mixing them up can turn a simple errand into a second trip. The Dallas County Assessor and Dallas County Collector are separate offices. One handles the record of what is assessed. The other handles tax payment and receipts.

For a vehicle owner, that split shows up fast. A paid personal property tax receipt comes from the collector in the county where the property was located and the taxes were paid. A statement of non-assessment, often called a waiver, comes from the assessor when you did not own or possess taxable personal property as of January 1.

Use the question to choose the counter. “What did the county think I owned?” or “What value was assigned?” starts with the Assessor. “Was the bill paid?” or “Can I get the receipt for tags?” starts with the Collector. Keeping those two jobs separate is the cleanest way through Dallas County tax paperwork.
