Rush Creek gives Liberty a small wildlife corridor
Rush Creek near Liberty shows how Clay County's public nature spaces can be small, local, and tied to wildlife corridors.
Rush Creek is a small note with a useful Clay County lesson: public nature does not always have to be a big lake or a regional park.
MDC’s area map places Rush Creek Conservation Area in Clay County near Liberty and lists 43 acres with hiking trail access. MDC later described Rush Creek and nearby Walnut Woods as habitat meant to stay open to the public while preserving wildlife and a riparian corridor.
That makes the place a nice counterweight to Clay County’s larger Smithville Lake story. Rush Creek is neighborhood-scale nature, tied to Liberty, Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary, and a creek corridor rather than a big destination.
Use MDC’s map and current local management links before going, because ownership and day-to-day management can change over time.
