Swan Lake is Chariton County's federal bird refuge
Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge gives Chariton County a federal wetland and bird-migration anchor near Sumner.
Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one of Chariton County’s strongest place anchors. It is federal land, not a county park or private hunting club, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service runs it around wetland habitat.
The refuge was established in 1937 to provide habitat, sanctuary, and breeding grounds for migratory birds and other wildlife. Today it covers more than 10,000 acres and is managed for waterfowl, geese, shorebirds, and other migrating birds. It is also an Important Bird Area for Missouri.
For a visitor, Swan Lake has a practical side: wildlife drive access, observation areas, fishing, hunting, and programs can depend on season and refuge rules. For a resident, it is a reminder that Chariton County is not only farm fields and small towns. It also has a federal wetland landscape built around bird migration.
