How the county seat came to sit at Stockton
Stockton has been the Cedar County seat since long before the lake existed, and understanding the county's formation and the courthouse square explains why the seat and county offices sit where they do today
Stockton is the Cedar County seat. Its role as the county’s civic center came long before Stockton Lake.
That order matters. The courthouse-square town came first. The reservoir and state park came later, after the Sac River was dammed and the lake became the area’s big recreation feature.
