The name has a better story than the office map suggests. SHSMO’s place-name file says the county was organized in 1833 and was intended to be named Wakenda. Just before the bill passed, news of the death of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, reached Jefferson City, and the new county was named Carroll instead. Carrollton, the county seat, then took its name from Carroll’s estate.
