City street problems go through Cape's reporter

Inside Cape Girardeau city limits, potholes and street issues can be reported through the city's problem reporter rather than the county Highway Department.

In Cape Girardeau County, a pothole inside the city may belong to the City of Cape Girardeau rather than the county Highway Department. The city’s streets page says multiple departments coordinate to maintain about 233 miles of streets and 22 miles of alleyways.

For a driver, the useful source is the city’s Report a Problem page. It points residents to the web form or text option for non-urgent issues such as weeds, debris, potholes, and other concerns.

Use the city reporter when the problem is on a city-maintained street. Use Cape Girardeau County Highway for county roads and MoDOT for state routes. The right owner matters because it controls who can patch, sign, close, or inspect the road.
