Far West was Caldwell County's first county-seat story

Far West gives Caldwell County a careful 1830s story: a planned county-seat community, religious refuge, conflict site, and almost-vanished town west of Kingston.

Far West is one reason Caldwell County history should never feel generic. The town began as a planned refuge for Latter-day Saint settlers in the 1830s, after conflict pushed them out of Jackson County and made Clay County only a temporary stop.

The scale is what makes the story land. Far West was officially established in 1836 as a mile-square townsite and new Latter-day Saint “capital.” Within a year, it had become a booming county-seat town of several thousand residents. This was more than a camp on the edge of the prairie. It was a planned town with city blocks, public buildings, and a temple lot at the center of the design.

The temple was never built, but that unfinished detail is part of why the place sticks. Church leaders laid a cornerstone in 1837. The cellar was excavated and cornerstones were set. Today, little is left of the town except the temple lot site, markers, and the cornerstones of the proposed temple building.

That boom did not last. In 1838, conflict and fear around the Mormon War overtook the county. Far West emptied soon after the Latter-day Saint community left Missouri, though the site remained the Caldwell County seat until the county seat moved to Kingston in 1843. The State Parks National Register listing places Far West west of Kingston by county roads D and H.

For a reader, the point is care. Far West is not a booster story or a quick roadside curiosity. It is a place where religious settlement, county formation, conflict, displacement, and the county-seat map all meet. Start with the official historic-place source, then use stronger scholarly sources for deeper questions.
