Poplar Bluff Conservation Area adds woods and lake access near town
Poplar Bluff and Stephen J. Sun conservation areas give Butler County public land close to Poplar Bluff, with Carpenter Lake and Poplar Bluff Forest Natural Area.
East of Poplar Bluff, five public tracts cover 1,591 acres. They make up Poplar Bluff Conservation Area and Stephen J. Sun Conservation Area.
The two areas sit where the Ozark highlands meet the coastal plain wetland. Upland oaks and hickories grow near bottomland trees such as sweetgum, red maple, and sugarberry. Six-acre Carpenter Lake is an old oxbow at the meeting point between the Ozarks and the Mississippi lowlands. The 80-acre Poplar Bluff Forest Natural Area protects bottomland woods with many large trees.
MDC has also recorded river otters and swamp rabbits at Stephen J. Sun. That mix explains why a short drive from town can feel like a crossing between two parts of Missouri, not merely a trip to another city park.
