Poplar Bluff Conservation Area adds woods and lake access near town

Poplar Bluff and Stephen J. Sun conservation areas give Butler County public land close to Poplar Bluff, with Carpenter Lake and Poplar Bluff Forest Natural Area.

East of Poplar Bluff, the edge of town turns into managed public land pretty quickly. Poplar Bluff Conservation Area and Stephen J. Sun Conservation Area sit in Butler County east of the city.

Together, the two conservation areas cover 1,591 acres in five tracts. The named pieces include six-acre Carpenter Lake and the 80-acre Poplar Bluff Forest Natural Area.

That gives the county page useful outdoor color without making a travel pitch. A reader can see that Poplar Bluff’s edge is not only highways, offices, and the Black River flood story. It also includes woods, lake access, and natural-area ground close enough to shape how the city meets the countryside.
