Butler is the county seat of Bates County. A county seat is the town where the county’s main offices sit. Like many Missouri county seats, Butler is built around a central courthouse square. The courthouse and the county offices sit on this square. Around them is a ring of older shops and buildings.
The square is where you handle county business. The assessor, the collector, the recorder, and other offices work here. So it is the place to go for property and records questions. It is also the heart of downtown life.
Long ago, in the 1800s, towns often chose a county seat that was easy for rural folks to reach. Bates County’s early records were disrupted during the Civil War. That makes its early courthouse story harder to trace.
