The Brownville Bridge is Atchison County's U.S. 136 river crossing

The U.S. 136 bridge near Phelps City is both a Missouri River crossing and a historic Atchison County driving landmark.

The Brownville Bridge is one of the places where Atchison County’s map feels different from an inland county. Missouri State Parks’ National Register list identifies the Brownville Bridge as U.S. 136 over the Missouri River near Phelps City.

It is also a practical driving checkpoint. MoDOT’s 2023 project notice describes Route 136 in Phelps City and the bridge over the Missouri River to Brownville, Nebraska, and points drivers to the Traveler Information Map for work zones and road information.

If you use U.S. 136 to cross the river, do not treat the bridge as just another local road. Check MoDOT before a storm, flood repair, or construction trip, especially if the crossing is part of a work route, farm trip, or medical errand.
